Retirement for Barrasso

PITTSBURGH, June 18 (UPI) -- Goaltender Tom Barrasso of the Pittsburgh Penguins has retired.

He signed with the team Tuesday to retire as a Penguins.

Barrasso, 38, backstopped the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and '92. In 777 NHL games, he posted a record of 369-277-86, a 3.24 goals against average, and 38 shutouts.

"It is a real honor for our organization to have a player of such stature such as Tom Barrasso want to retire as a Pittsburgh Penguin," said General Manager Craig Patrick.

In 12 seasons with the Penguins, he appeared in 460 career games for a record of 226-153-53 with a 3.27 goals against average and 22 shutouts. He currently holds club records for games, minutes played, wins, saves and shutouts, and also holds the Penguins' season record for wins with 43, set in the 1992-93 season and shutouts (7) in 1997-98.

He ranks 12th all-time in NHL history with 369 wins, 14th with 777 games.
