'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, June 16 (UPI) -- Sjeng Schalken opened defense of his Ordina Open title Monday with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spain's Albert Portas at this grasscourt Wimbledon warmup.
The third-seeded Dutchman improved to 16-8 lifetime at this
event.
Second seed Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand snapped a five-match losing streak with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over 23-year-old Dutch qualifier Paul Logtens, who was making his ATP main draw debut.
No. 6 Tommy Robredo of Spain, who reached the quarterfinals of the French Open, rallied past German Frank Moser, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, in the only other men's match Monday involving a seed.
Three of four women's seeds in action advanced to the second round. No. 4 Elena Dementieva of Russia - last year's runner-up -overcame Emilie Loit of France, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
