Neuheisel firing confirmed

SEATTLE, June 12 (UPI) -- The firing of Washington football coach Rick Neuheisel was officially confirmed Thursday by Athletic Director Barbara Hedges.

"Rick's action's have left me little choice and have seriously undermined his ability to continue as the head football coach at the university," Hedges said at a news conference.

No replacement was named.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Wednesday that Neuheisel invested $6,400 and won $12,123 during his two years participating in the NCAA Tournament pools. NCAA bylaw 10.3 prohibits athletic department employees and student-athletes from gambling.

Neuheisel angered school officials recently when he interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers job without telling them.

"We clearly told Rick that further acts of dishonesty would not be tolerated," Hedges said. "Accordingly, I believe that Rick's conduct as a whole is grounds for his dismissal."

Neuheisel went 33-16 in four years at Washington. He had five years left on his contract.
