Al Unser Jr. wins IRL IndyCar 500

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 7 (UPI) -- Al Unser Jr. finally was able to beat the demon of the stopwatch Saturday and win the Bombardier 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Unser lost last year's race at TMS to Jeff Ward by just .0111 seconds and lost to Sam Hornish Jr. at Chicagoland Speedway in the closest finish in IndyCar history by .0024 seconds.

But Saturday night, Unser was able to score his third win the IRL and his first since St. Louis in September 2001.

Unser had to survive a two-lap shootout - a green flag, white flag and checkered flag situation - before he could celebrate his victory in front of an estimated crowd of 92,000 fans.

When the green flag dropped, Unser was able to hold his line and score the victory by just .0810 seconds.

It was his 34th Indy car victory, including 31 wins prior to joining the IRL in 2000.
