Sosa awaits word from baseball brass

CHICAGO, June 6 (UPI) -- Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa awaited word Friday on how Major League Baseball would deal with him for using an illegal corked bat in a game.

Bob Watson, baseball's chief disciplinarian, left Chicago for New York on Thursday after meeting with the Cubs about Sosa being caught with a corked bat during Tuesday night's 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Wrigley Field.

Baseball officials confiscated part of the corked bat and 76 more of Sosa's bats Tuesday. X-rays of the 76 bats revealed no foreign substances.

Sosa most likely faced a suspension of anwhere from one to 10 days. He maintains the corked bat was one he used exclusively for batting practice and that he took it to the plate by mistake. Cork was discovered when the bat shattered as Sosa grounded out. Umpires ejected Sosa from the game

In another development, the Baseball Hall of Fame announced that X-rays taken of five bats Sosa donated to the hall turned up negative.
