McLean took over as coach following a midseason shakeup. The Blue Jackets were 14-20-4-2 when MacLean fired Dave King as coach on Jan. 7 and put himself behind the bench on an interim basis.

Under McLean, Columbus went 15-22-4-1 the rest of the way, and finished with 69 points, the third worst total in the NHL.

MacLean has spent the past 17 years in coaching and front office jobs with five NHL teams. He is best known for guiding the Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1995-96 in his first year as coach.

MacLean, 49, compiled a record of 83-71-33 with the Panthers. He previously served as an assistant general manager with Detroit, and as an assistant coach with Washington and St. Louis.
