HOUSTON, May 30 (UPI) -- Shannon Johnson had 31 points and eight rebounds and Nykesha Sales scored 20 points Friday night as the Connecticut Sun posted their first win, a 91-83 upset of the Houston Comets.
Connecticut, formerly the Orlando Miracle, lost its inaugural game on Saturday, falling to two-time defending champion Los Angeles. But the Sun rebounded to defeat the Comets, who are expected to contend for the title this season.
Connecticut led by as many as 10 points, but Houston rallied for a 66-66 tie with 8:27 remaining. The Sun responded with eight straight points. Johnson made a three-pointer and a layup during the burst.
Johnson made nine of 16 shots and 11 of 15 free throws as Connecticut shot 52 percent, including eight of 16 three-pointers.
Katie Douglas scored 14 points and Wendy Palmer added 12 points for the Sun. Palmer made three of four shots from the field.
Cynthia Cooper scored a season-high 22 points and Michelle Snow added 10 and 13 rebounds as the Comets lost for the first time in three games.
Houston's Sheryl Swoopes, who scored 50 points in the first two games, was held to nine points. She collected seven rebounds and five assists.
