Patriots sign Dedric Ward

FOXBORO, Mass., May 22 (UPI) -- Free agent wide receiver Dedric Ward, who spent the past two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, signed with the New England Patriots Thursday.

Ward, 28, has started 33 of 38 games in his six-year NFL career, catching 159 passes for 2,196 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has returned 106 career punts for 886 yards and five kickoffs for 70 yards.

The 5-9, 185-pound Ward spent his first four seasons with the New York Jets after being picked in the third round of the 1997 draft.

Ward's best season came in 2000, when he hauled in a career-high 54 receptions for 801 yards.

He signed with Miami as a free agent on April 18, 2001 and played in 29 games in his two seasons with the Dolphins, but just two as a starter.
