NY Mets 5, San Francisco 1

SAN FRANCISCO, May 18 (UPI) -- Jason Phillips had two hits, including a two-run homer, and Tom Glavine carried a shutout in the ninth inning Sunday as the New York Mets held on for a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

With struggling first baseman Mo Vaughn sidelined with a knee injury, New York had planned to start using catcher Mike Piazza at first base. But Piazza went down with a serious groin injury Friday and the Mets recalled Phillips, who is a catcher making the move to first base.

After going two for five with an RBI on Saturday, the 26-year-old Phillips homered and singled as the Mets earned a split of the four-game series. New York has won two straight at Pacific Bell Park after losing their first 12 regular season games here.

Glavine (5-3) allowed just four singles in the first eight innings. He surrendered a leadoff homer to Marquis Grissom in the ninth and left after Benito Santiago's base hit with one out.

Armando Benitez entered and retired the final two batters to extend his scoreless streak to 11 1/3 innings.
