Ed Carpenter wins Freedom 100

INDIANAPOLIS, May 18 (UPI) -- Ed Carpenter scored his first victory Sunday in the Infiniti Pro Series at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, owned by his stepfather, Tony George.

Carpenter dominated Sunday's race, defeating Cory Witherill by 13.9522-seconds over Cory Witherill. Mark Taylor, who had won the first two races of the season, was third followed by Jeff Simmons and Jonathan Urlin.

The race started on Saturday afternoon but had been stopped after 12 laps because of rain.

When the green flag finally waved on Sunday morning, Carpenter tried to motor away from the field but, just as on Saturday, the field couldn't complete a lap without another yellow flag. That came when Gary Petersen crashed in the third turn.

But when the green flag waved on lap 20, Carpenter was able to settle down the field over the final 20 laps to win the race for team owner A.J. Foyt - the first four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 as a driver.

This was the first race other than the Indianapolis 500 to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the month of May.
