Ten Georgia Tech players ineligible

ATLANTA, May 15 (UPI) -- Georgia Tech Thursday declared 11 student-athletes, including 10 football players, academically ineligble following the spring semester.

Among the football players who will not be able to play in 2003 are three starters, including tailback Tony Hollings and defensive back Tony Hargrove, and backups Anthony Lawston, Kingi McNair and Michael Sampson.

According to the university, the others could not be reached and their names were not revealed.

"I'm disappointed for these young men," Georgia Tech football coach Chan Gailey said. "I hope that they will work hard toward continuing their education, and we will do everything we can to help them."

Due to the family and educational rights and privacy act, Georgia Tech cannot release academic information without the student's permission.

"This is a very unfortunate situation for these young people and for Georgia Tech, but it is an aberration," athletic director Dave Braine said.
