Dolphins sign free agent S Sammy Knight

MIAMI, May 13 (UPI) -- The Miami Dolphins upgraded their secondary on Tuesday by signing veteran strong safety Sammy Knight to a two-year deal.

ESPN reported that the deal is worth $2.38 million, including a $300,000 signing bonus. Knight previously opted out of a contract with the New Orleans Saints that would have paid him $1.5 million next season.

A Pro Bowler in 2001, Knight played his first six NFL seasons with the Saints. He has 29 interceptions, including a team-high five last season. He also had 127 tackles in 2002.

"I think that they have a great secondary," Knight said. "Something that they take great pride in is getting after the ball and getting after people on defense. I just want to add to that."

Knight, 27, likely would move into the Dolphins' starting lineup ahead of Arturo Freeman, who has one interception in three seasons.

Knight is be the second University of Southern California product signed by the Dolphins this offseason, joining linebacker Junior Seau.

Miami's 21 interceptions last season tied Oakland for fifth behind Tampa Bay (31), Baltimore (25) and Green Bay and Atlanta (24).
