NEW YORK, May 9 (UPI) -- Jesse Orosco struck out Roberto Alomar with runners on first and third and two outs in the ninth inning Friday night to preserve a 5-4 victory for the San Diego Padres over the New York Mets.
The 46-year-old Orosco, baseball's all-time leader with 1,206 games pitched, was called upon by Manager Bruce Bochy to face the switch-hitting Alomar, who was just one for 11 against Orosco in his career. A weak hitter from the right side of the plate, Alomar struck out on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.
It was the second save of the season for Orosco and the 144th of his career, 107 of them coming with the Mets. The lefthander was the closer on New York's 1986 championship team, getting the last out in both the clinching games in the National League Championship Series and the World Series.
Rookie Xavier Nady snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer off reliever David Weathers (1-2) in the eighth inning.
Luther Hackman (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win.
The Mets scored a run in the eighth off reliever Matt Herges, pulling within 5-4. Raul Gonzalez hit Herges' first pitch over the head of center fielder Mark Kotsay for a double, moved to third on a grounder by Mike Piazza and scored on a groundout by Cliff Floyd.
With two outs in the ninth, Rey Sanchez singled and barely reached third on a base hit to center Jay Bell before Orosco struck out Alomar.
