Surprising American reaches Bol semis

BOL, Croatia, May 2 (UPI) -- No. 3 Vera Zvonareva, the only seed left in the Croatian Bol Ladies Open, coasted into the semifinals Friday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ludmilla Cervanova of the Czech Republic.

Zvonareva, 18, from Russia, is seeking her first career title. Last year, Zvonareva reached the quarterfinals of this event as a qualifier, losing to eventual finalist Iva Majoli.

On Saturday, Zvonareva will take on unheralded American Samantha Reeves, the world's 123rd ranked player, who reached the semifinals when Spanish qualifier Gala Leon Garcia retired in the second set. Reeves was leading at the time, 7-6 (7-3), 3-0.

On Thursday, Garcia upset top seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Reeves, 24, also is seeking her first career victory, having advanced to her first semifinal of the year. After reaching the third round in Bovina, Reeves failed to even qualify in her next four events.

Saturday's other semifinal will be contested by a pair of Spaniards as No. 88 Conchita Martinez Granados takes on No. 87 Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, the only one of the four semifinalists who has won on the WTA Tour.
