Tigers release Paquette, recall Torres

DETROIT, April 29 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers on Tuesday unconditionally released infielder-outfielder Craig Paquette, who was hitting just .152 in 11 games.

Paquette, 34, originally was signed as a free agent by the Tigers in December 2001, but hit just .194 with four homers and 20 RBI in 252 at-bats last season and had just five hits in his first 33 at-bats this year.

Paquette hit .282 with 15 homers and 64 RBI in 2001 for St. Louis before signing as a free agent with Detroit.

The Tigers recalled outfielder Andres Torres from Class AAA Toledo of the International League to replace Paquette on the roster.

Torres hit .350 in 22 games for the Mud Hens with 17 runs, four doubles, two triples and five RBI. He was second in the International League with 13 stolen bases.
