Garbin upends Grande at Ladies Open

BOL, Croatia, April 28 (UPI) -- Tathiana Garbin ousted fellow Italian Rita Grande in three sets Monday to reach the second round of the Croatian Bol Ladies Open.

Garbin eliminated the fifth seed, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, in the only main draw match of the day. She advanced to the second round for the third straight event but has not got past that stage since a quarterfinal run at Gold Coast the first week of the year.

Garbin's season was stalled somewhat by a right shoulder injury suffered in February.

The top two seeds, Patty Schnyder of Switzerland and Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, received first-round byes. But No. 3 Vera Zvonareva will be in action Tuesday against Croatian qualifier Petra Dizdar.

The rising Russian star lost in the second round at Amelia Island two weeks ago but has appeared in four quarterfinals this season, two coming at Tier I tournaments in Indian Wells and Charleston.
