DETROIT, April 23 (UPI) -- Pat Verbeek, the only player in NHL history to have more than 500 goals and 2,500 penalty, officially announced his retirement Wednesday after 20 seasons.
Verbeek, 38, did not play this season after leaving the Dallas Stars as a free agent following the 2001-02 campaign.
A broadcaster for Detroit Red Wings' away games this season, Verbeek won a Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1999. He also has played with New Jersey, Hartford, the New York Rangers and Detroit during his career that began in 1982.
Verbeek leaves the game 25th on the all-time list with 522 career goals and 51st all-time with 1,063 points in 1,424 games. He also amassed 2,905 penalty minutes.
