Mayweather records unanimous win

FRESNO, Calif., April 19 (UPI) -- Undefeated WBC lightweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. easily retained his 135-pound title Saturday night as he scored a unanimous decision over Victoriano Sosa of the Dominican Republic.

Making his second title defense, Mayweather (30-0) had few problems with the one-dimensional style of Sosa. There were no knockdowns, but Mayweather was the more technically competent and skilled boxer.

Mayweather landed the cleaner punches while keeping a tight guard as he blocked most of Sosa's punches.

"I knew he was tough," Mayweather said. "I wasn't looking past him. He is a tough, solid opponent, but I stuck to the game plan and boxed."

Mayweather landed 55 percent of his punches (248 of 448) and connected on 60 percent of his jabs (147 of 246).

Sosa threw more punches (565) but most were blocked by the champion as the cousin of Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa landed just 79 punches.

"He is a solid opponent," Mayweather said. "I took my time and did what I had to do. The main thing is winning and Floyd Mayweather won tonight."

Sosa, who nearly upset current IBF champion Paul Spadafora in May 2000, fell to 35-3-2.

On the undercard, junior welterweight prospect Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico remained unbeaten by methodically dismantling Joel Perez en route to a fourth-round knockout.
