Kafelnikov ousted in Portugal

ESTORIL, Portugal, April 11 (UPI) -- Sixth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russian fell to countryman Nikolay Davydenko at the Estoril Open Friday, 6-2, 6-4, but painted an optimistic spin after winning back-to-back matches here on clay.

"I think things are heading in the right direction," said the 29-year-old Kafelnikov. "Hopefully, I'll get even more confidence back after this week. That can help me going into the French (Open)."

Kafelnikov lasted just 67 minutes against his unranked Davis Cup teammate.

"He had too many winners and was the better man," Kafelnikov said. "I didn't make very many mistakes, he was more consistent and had more power."

Argentina's Agustin Calleri upset fourth seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, 7-5, 6-1 Friday and will face fifth seed Tommy Robredo in the semifinals. Robredo beat fellow Spaniard Galo Blanco 6-2, 6-3 on Friday.

A young German continued her upset roll on the women's side.

Julia Schruff, a 20-year-old from Augsburg, followed Thursday's upset of top seed Katarina Srebotnik with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia.
