San Francisco 8; San Diego 1

SAN DIEGO, April 2 (UPI) -- Jason Schmidt (1-0), almost unhittable, gave up two hits in seven innings, and struck out seven without a walk Tuesday night as San Francisco routed San Diego, 8-1.

Schmidt got the first two outs in the eighth before Gary Bennett singled, Keith Lockhart walked, and Ramon Vazquez doubled to spoil his shutout bid.

Chad Zerbe came on and retired pinch-hitter Brian Buchanan on a groundout, then breezed through the ninth to nail down the Giants' second straight win.

Schmidt improved to 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA in his last four outings in San Diego. More importantly, San Francisco is 29-11 in his 41 starts since coming over in a trade with Pittsburgh in July 2001.

Barry Bonds hit a mammoth three-run homer, a 463-foot blast off Mike Bynum, that extended the Giants' lead to 7-0 in the top of the eighth.

In the ninth, Ray Durham slugged San Francisco's third solo shot of the contest, and seventh home run in two games this season.

San Diego starter Adam Eaton (0-1) went six innings and gave up just four hits, but two were homers by former Padre Benito Santiago and Jose Cruz Jr. He walked two and struck out three.
