Pittsburgh 3, Carolina 2

PITTSBURGH, April 2 (UPI) -- Eric Meloche scored his second goal of the game with 11 seconds remaining Wednesday night as the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied for a 3-2 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes in a battle of the NHL's worst teams.

Mario Lemieux got a pass from defenseman outside the left faceoff circle and moved the puck down low for Meloche, who put a shot past goaltender Arturs Irbe for his fifth goal of the season and first game-winner in 35 NHL contests.

Meloche also opened the scoring with seven minutes to play in the first period as his shot from the left side hit the skate of Carolina defenseman Sean Hill and caromed past Irbe.

After rookie Michael Zigomanis and Craig MacDonald scored less than two minutes apart midway through the second period to put the Hurricanes in front, defenseman Richard Lintner tied it with 3:01 left in the third.

That goal gave a boost to the Penguins, who caught a break when rookie Ryan Bayda took a double-minor for high-sticking with 93 seconds remaining. Meloche's goal lifted Pittsburgh to just its second win in 20 games.
