Pittsburgh 10, Boston 4

FORT MYERS, Fla., March 16 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates pounded Casey Fossum for six runs in the first three innings and went on to a 10-4 victory Sunday over the Boston Red Sox.

Mike Gulan and Pokey Reese had run-scoring hits in the second and Rob Mackowiak had a two-run single in the third as the Pirates built a 6-2 lead.

Fossum lasted 2 1/3 innings, walking three and striking out three.

Pittsburgh banged out 12 hits, including a solo homer by Kevin Young in the seventh.

Pirates starter Kris Benson won for the first time this spring, allowing three runs and six hits in five innings.

Kevin Millar hit a solo homer for the Red Sox in the fourth.
