Big 12 Conference Roundup

DALLAS, March 14 (UPI) -- Hollis Price and Quannas White scored 19 points apiece Friday night as Oklahoma continued its quest for a third straight Big 12 Conference Tournament title with a 74-59 quarterfinal victory over Colorado.

Oklahoma will face Texas Tech in Saturday's semifinals after the Red Raiders surprised Texas, 92-81.

In the other quarterfinal action, Kansas whipped Iowa State, 89-74, and Missouri pulled out a thrilling 60-58 decision over Oklahoma State.

Price, the Big 12 Player of the Year, scored 13 points in the opening 20 minutes as the Sooners (22-6) grabbed a 40-32 halftime lead.

But Colorado, which pulled off a wild victory over Kansas State in the opening round Thursday night, drew within 56-51 with 9:14 remaining on a jumper by Michael Morandais.

White, however, made two of his five three-pointers as Oklahoma closed the contest on an 18-8 run.

David Harrison paced Colorado with 10 points. But none of his teammates reached double figures and the Buffaloes (20-11) had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Andre Emmett had 30 points and 11 rebounds and Nathan Doudney recorded career highs with 28 points and seven three-pointers to give Texas Tech its big win over No. 3 Texas.

It was the Red Raiders' first win over Texas in 14 tries and might have wrapped up an NCAA Tournament bid for Texas Tech and Coach Bob Knight, who said he would give back his salary this year because his team underachieved.

Friday night's results likely wiped out Texas' hopes of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament while Oklahoma, which lost twice to Texas this season, perhaps inherited the prize.

Kasib Powell registered a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the Red Raiders (18-11).

Texas Tech played an almost perfect first half with Emmett converting a layup with 1:40 left in the period as the Red Raiders opened a 50-30 cushion.

T.J. Ford had 23 points and eight assists as Texas pulled within 80-74 with 3:37 to play.

But the Longhorns (22-6) lost for just the third time in 42 games against intrastate rivals during coach Rick Barnes' five seasons.

Missouri advanced when Travon Bryant hit a fallaway jumper at the buzzer in the day's second quarterfinal game.

Bryant's winning basket snapped the game's 13th tie and came after Oklahoma State played stellar defense on the final possession.

With time running down, Jimmy McKinney drove the right baseline, but was shut off and had the ball knocked away. However, it wound up in the hands of Bryant, who launched a 12-footer in the lane with just over a second left.

The ball bounced on the rim before dropping through the basket as time expired. Missouri (20-9) reached 20 wins for the third straight season.

McKinney scored 16 points and Arthur Johnson added 12 for Missouri, which defeated Nebraska in the first round Thursday.

Friday's contest featured 14 leads changes with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage during the second half.

The Cowboys (21-9) took a 58-55 lead on Ivan Mcfarlin's foul shot with 2:32 left, but McKinney scored on a driving layup while being fouled and hit the free throw to tie it for the final time with 1:47 left.

Victor Williams scored 12 points and Melvin Sanders and Andre Williams added 10 apiece for Oklahoma State, which will go into the NCAA Tournament having won just five of its last 12 games.

Keith Langford keyed the Kansas effort with 19 points and all five starters scored in double figures. Kansas improved to 25-6.

Jeff Graves and Aaron Miles scored 16 points and Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich each had 14.

The Jayhawks are in contention for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament and took another step in that direction with an easy win. Graves had nine of his points in the first half to help the Jayhawks build a 45-30 lead at intermission.

The closest Iowa State could come in the second half was at 55-45 on a basket by Jared Homan with 15:37 left. But baskets by Graves, Langford and Miles increased the lead to 16 points.

Kansas built its lead to as many as 22 points when Langford sank two free throws to make it 82-60 with 4:13 left.

The Jayhawks, who have claimed three Big 12 tournament titles but none since 1999, have won five straight and 12 of their last 13 games.
