Rob Mackowiak homered twice and Jack Wilson, Brian Giles and Matt Stairs also went deep to help Pittsburgh to a 7-6 lead into the sixth.

Houston's bullpen shut down the Pirates thereafter. Ken Vining allowed a walk in a scoreless seventh to pick up his second spring win and Greg Miller struck out two and walked two in a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Both teams registered 11 hits.
