Tampa Bay 8, NY Yankees 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 9 (UPI) -- Rookie Rocco Baldelli smacked a three-run double and Greg Vaughn and Travis Lee homered on consecutive pitches Sunday to carry the Tampa Bay Devil Rays past the New York Yankees, 8-3.

Baldelli cleared the bases during a four-run sixth inning as the Devil Rays built a 5-3 lead. Vaughn and Lee homered in a three-run seventh.

Cuban rookie Jose Contreras was the victim of Tampa Bay's outburst, allowing seven runs and seven hits with two walks in three innings. In eight innings this spring, Contreras has yielded 15 runs.

Vaughn went three for four with two RBI for the Devil Rays, who totaled 12 hits and snapped a five-game losing streak.

Lance Carter picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Devil Rays starter Nick Bierbrodt yielded an unearned run and a hit while walking three and striking out three in three frames.

Yankees starter Jeff Weaver allowed one run and five hits with three strikeouts in four innings.

Jorge Posada and Robin Ventura each had an RBI for New York. Japanese rookie Hideki Matsui went one for four with a triple and run scored.
