PHILADELPHIA, March 6 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Eagles waived veteran strong safety Blaine Bishop Thursday, all but turning the starting job over to Michael Lewis.
Bishop started for the Eagles last season, his 10th with the team.
"I want to thank Blaine for his contributions last year," Coach Andy Reid said. "I wish he and his family all the best. Michael Lewis will step in for Blaine at that strong safety position."
Bishop fought off injuries several times last year and missed the final four games of the regular season. He returned for the playoffs and recorded six tackles.
Lewis, the first of Philadelphia's two second-round draft picks last year, had a big December, apparently convincing the team he could do the job. That month, he had 35 tackles, one sack, one interception, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
"It's a big opportunity for me to showcase my talents and I have an opportunity to prove my value to this team and I look forward to the challenge," Lewis said.
Bishop played in 12 regular-season games in 2002 and had 63 tackles.
