St. John's 72, Duke 71

NEW YORK, March 2 (UPI) -- Marcus Hatten stripped Chris Duhon at midcourt and sank a free throw with no time remaining Sunday as St. John's scored the final 12 points to stun fifth-ranked Duke, 72-71.

Duke had a chance to hold the ball for a final shot, but Duhon lost control of his dribble and Hatten came away with it after the two made contact.

Breaking straight to the basket, Hatten attempted a finger roll as Duhon cut in front. The ball bounced off the rim, but Duhon was called for a foul.

With no one else on the court, Hatten cleanly sank a foul shot before sprinting to the St. John's bench as his teammates ran to greet him.

"I stuck my hand out and came up with a pot of gold," Hatten said. "I was just glad. We stuck together when they were making their runs. We never gave up."

"I've got to take care of the ball as a point guard," Duhon said. "I'm not supposed to turn the ball over."

Hatten, who suffered a deep thigh bruise in Wednesday's loss to Boston College, scored 29 points as St. John's (13-12) won for just the second time in eight games and posted an impressive non-conference victory.

Kyle Cuffe added 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, Kevin Glover also finished with 12 points, and Grady Reynolds pulled down 10 rebounds as St. John's held a 41-34 edge on the glass. The Red Storm overcame 39 percent (24-of-62) shooting.

New Jersey native Dahntay Jones scored 23 points to lead Duke (20-5), which had a four-game winning streak halted. The Blue Devils did not score after Jones hit a free throw to make it 71-60 with 4:05 to play.

It was Duke's lone non-conference loss of the season.

"This is not the same Duke team we've seen the past week or so," said Duke sophomore guard Daniel Ewing. "We weren't really fired up. We had some spurts of enthusiasm, but not the way it's been the last couple of weeks. I really don't know why. We might have been too relaxed or we might have underestimated them. I'm not really sure."
