St. Louis 4, Edmonton 1

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Rookie goaltender Curtis Sanford made 22 saves Thursday night, boosting the St. Louis Blues to a 4-1 victory over Edmonton that extended the Oilers' winless streak to eight games.

Another rookie goalie, Jussi Markkanen, managed 27 saves of his own but it was not enough to halt the Edmonton skid.

Defenseman Steve Staios gave Edmonton a lead just 3:29 into the first period with a power-play goal, but that was all the Oilers could muster against Sanford.

With Markkanen sprawled across the goalmouth in the second period, St. Louis got on the board on rookie Justin Papineau's first NHL goal.

Markkanen got off the ground on Dallas Drake's game-winner with 10:33 left in the third period. But as the 27-year-old Finn jumped, Drake's blast sailed past him.

Pavol Demitra, who set up the Blues' first two goals, picked up another assist with 74 seconds remaining. He passed from the blue line to the slot, from where rookie Eric Boguniecki scored his 16th of the season.

Steve Martins added an empty-netter with 50 seconds left to seal the win as St. Louis ended a three-game losing streak.
