UNIONDALE, N.Y., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Jamie Langenbrunner was stopped on a shorthanded breakaway with three seconds to go in overtime and put in the rebound just after the final buzzer Thursday night as the New Jersey Devils settled for a 3-3 tie with the New York Islanders.
New York had a power play for the final 98 seconds of the extra period after New Jersey rookie Michael Rupp was penalized for holding. But the Devils had all the scoring chances.
Rick DiPietro stopped John Madden's wrist shot from the right faceoff circle on a 2-on-1 with 1:15 remaining and caught a break when the puck hopped over the stick of Patrik Elias on another odd-man rush with 17 seconds left.
The Islanders counterattacked, but coughed up the puck at the Devils' blue line, sending Langenbrunner in alone on DiPietro. Making his first start since Feb. 4, DiPietro stopped Langenbrunner's backhander.
Langenbrunner retrieved the puck and skated out front, but DiPietro's lunge cost him precious time as his shot failed to beat the buzzer.
Second-period goals by Jeff Friesen and John Madden gave New Jersey a 3-2 lead, but the Devils failed to protect it.
During a scramble with 8:46 left in regulation, the puck squirted to the left faceoff circle, from where Shawn Bates batted it under the right arm of New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur for his 11th goal.
Brad Isbister and Dave Scatchard had the other goals for the Islanders, who are winless in their last three games (0-1-2) and slipped one point behind Tampa Bay for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
