Man. United advances in Champions League

TURIN, Italy, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Welsh striker Ryan Giggs came on as a substitute and scored two goals Tuesday as Manchester United rolled to a 3-0 victory over Juventus in Group D of the Champions League.

The English club and Italy's AC Milan became the first teams to advance to the quarterfinals.

Giggs entered in the eighth minute for Diego Forlan, who damaged ankle ligaments and will be out six to eight weeks. The Welshman scored seven minutes later off a perfect pass from Argentine playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron, who broke free on the right side and fed the ball to the top of the goalkeeper's box.

Giggs had time to set up his left-footed shot and pick his spot to the far post.

His second came in the 41st minute on a long solo run from midfield after a giveaway by Juventus. Giggs controlled the ball past two defenders and scored a rare goal with his right leg to the same corner.

Early in the second half, Dutchman Ruud Van Nistelrooy replaced Giggs and made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute. The play resulted from another defensive error by Igor Tudor, who chested the ball off the post and right to Van Nistelrooy.

It was the Dutchman's 10th goal in seven Champions League matches.

Four years ago, United rallied from two goals down to defeat Juventus, 3-2, at Delle Alpi Stadium in the second leg of the semifinals, then went on to win the trophy for the second time.

Earlier in the day in Moscow, AC Milan became the first club to book a place in the quarterfinals with a Group C, 1-0 victory at Lokomotiv.

Brazilian midfielder Rivaldo scored the only goal in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot for the five-time European champions. It was the 1,000th match played in Champions League history.

AC Milan has a maximum 12 points from four matches and advanced with two matches to spare. Lokomotiv remained at the bottom with one point.

Milan captain Paolo Maldini, who was brought down for the penalty call, broke Giuseppe Bergomi's record for an Italian player's appearances in European competition. The 35-year-old defender -- Italy's most capped player with 126 games -- appeared in his 118th match.

In the same group, substitute Javier Portillo scored for Real Madrid in the final moments of injury time to salvage a 1-1 draw at German champion Borussia Dortmund. Zinedine Zidane rolled a pass across the area for Portillo to shoot past Jens Lehmann. Jan Koller scored for Dortmund in the 23rd minute.
