Athletics ink Gant

OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Veteran outfielder Ron Gant Friday agreed to a minor league contract to return to the Oakland Athletics.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Gant, who likely would be used as a reserve outfielder if he makes the team.

Gant, who turns 38 next month, hit .262 with 18 homers and 59 RBI in 102 games with the San Diego Padres last season. He finished the 2001 season with the Athletics, hitting .259 in 34 games.

The two-time All Star is a .257 hitter with 320 homers and 1,004 RBI in a 15-year career that has included stops in Atlanta, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Anaheim, and Colorado.

He played in the World Series for the Braves in 1991 and '92. His career was sidetracked by a 1994 dirt bike accident, in which he broke his leg.
