MORRISTOWN, N.J., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Past Heisman Trophy winners Barry Sanders and Andre Ware are among 83 candidates under consideration for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Ballots for the Class of 2003 were released Thursday. They include 77 players and six coaches.
Sanders, who had a brief but dominant stint at Oklahoma State, and Ware, a record-setting quarterback at Houston, won Heisman Trophies in 1988 and '89 respectively.
Also on the ballot are former Southern California running Anthony Davis, California quarterback Joe Kapp, Syracuse wide receiver Art Monk, Florida State defensive lineman Ron Simmons, and North Carolina linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The list of coaches includes Pat Dye and Darryl Rogers.
Ballots are distributed to more than 11,000 members of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The results will be announced in late March and induction will take place on Dec. 9 in New York City.
To be eligible for consideration, a player must have been a first team All-American, played at least 10 years ago, and retired from professional football. Coaches must be out of the game at least 10 years, coached a minimum of 10 years and 100 games, and won at least 60 percent of their games.
