Doug Weight suffers fluke injury

ST. LOUIS, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The St. Louis Blues announced Thursday that Doug Weight suffered a fractured bone in his face in Tuesday night's 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

While the Blues gave no time frame on Weight's return, the St. Louis Post Dispatch said Weight would be out from one to three weeks.

"It will be at least a couple of weeks," Coach Joel Quenneville told the Post Dispatch.

Weight suffered a non-displaced fracture of the maxilla bone in his face when he was hit with a clearing pass by Sabres goalie Martin Biron in the first period.

In the All-Star Game on Feb. 2, Weight was hit by a slap shot from Vancouver Canucks defenseman Ed Jovanovski and missed two games with a deep bone bruise.

An extended loss of Weight would be a huge blow to the Blues, who have played all season without injured captain Chris Pronger, a former Hart and Norris Trophy winner. They are 30-15-8-4 and lead the Central Division by five points over the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

A four-time All-Star, Weight has 12 goals and 45 assists this season.

The Blues, who host Philadelphia on Thursday, did not make any immediate roster move regarding Weight. Justin Papineau is expected to center Weight's line with Cory Stillman and Eric Boguniecki.
