Red Sox claim RHP Arroyo off waivers

BOSTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday claimed righthander Bronson Arroyo off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Arroyo, 25, went 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA in nine games - four starts - with the Pirates last season. He also was 8-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 22 appearances - 21 starts -for Pittsburgh's Class AAA affiliate at Nashville.

Since making his major league debut with the Pirates in 2000, Arroyo is 9-14 with a 5.44 ERA in 53 major league appearances, walking 85 while striking out 111 in 187 innings.

To make room on their 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated righthander Juan Pena for assignment.
