San Jose State signs coach to new pact

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- San Jose State football coach Fitz Hill signed a new four-year contract Tuesday after leading the school to only its third finish in the upper half of the Western Athletic Conference standings last year.

Hill's new contract runs through the 2006 season and replaces the original four-year pact he signed in December 2000, when he accepted the position.

"It is my intention to bring the first WAC championship trophy to San Jose State while we seek to educate and graduate our student-athletes," said Hill, one of only four black coaches of an NCAA Division I-A football program.

The 38-year-old Hill is one of only three Division I-A football coaches to have earned a doctoral degree.

With a non-conference win over defending Big Ten champion Illinois, San Jose State finished 6-7 and tied for fourth place in the WAC. The Spartans were in contention for a bowl berth heading into the final game of the season, despite playing nine road contests and a tough schedule.

Hill arrived at San Jose State after 11 seasons as an assistant coach at Arkansas.
