LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Reece Gaines scored 14 points Wednesday night as 14th-ranked Louisville used the combination of three-point shooting and defense to defeat DePaul, 71-43, in Conference USA action.
Erik Brown and freshman Francisco Garcia added 10 points apiece for Louisville (13-1, 5-0 C-USA American), which won its 13th straight, remained perfect in nine home games and improved to 5-0 for the first time in its seven Conference USA seasons.
The Cardinals did it with a three-point attack and some harassing defense, the qualities of a team coached by Rick Pitino. They went 12 of 32 from three-point range and held DePaul to 37 percent shooting (17-of-46).
Gaines, Brown and Garcia combined to go eight of 19 from three-point range while Bryant Northern went three of four for all nine of his points.
Louisville used a 13-2 run early in the first half to put away the game. Brown, freshman Taquan Dean and Northern all hit three-pointers during the burst, which made it 44-27 with 13:50 remaining.
Andre Brown scored 16 points for DePaul (10-5, 2-2), which dropped its 13th straight meeting with the Cardinals.
