Lions make Lewis offensive coordinator

ALLEN PARK, Mich., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The Detroit Lions on Monday promoted 20-year coach Sherman Lewis to offensive coordinator.

Lewis previously served as offensive coordinator with the Green Bay Packers from 1992-99 and with the Minnesota Vikings from 2000-01. He was hired as a special assistant by Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg last February.

Maurice Carthon was Detroit's offensive coordinator and running backs coach the last two seasons, but was lured by Bill Parcells to serve in the same position for the Dallas Cowboys.

Mornhinweg calls the offensive plays, but still promoted Lewis and last week named former Michigan State coach Bobby Williams as running backs coach.

Mornhinweg also made some changes to the defense, demoting Charles Haley from defensive line coach to special projects, and secondary coach Ray Horton to nickel package coach. George Dyer, who spent the last eight years with the Denver Broncos, will replace Haley as defensive line coach and assistant defensive line coach John Marshall was named linebackers coach.
