Edmonton 5, Montreal 4 (OT)

EDMONTON, Alberta, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Ryan Smyth scored his second goal of the game with a minute left in overtime Saturday night to give the Edmonton Oilers a 5-4 victory that extended the Montreal Canadiens's road winless streak to six games.

After the Canadiens rallied to tie it on Richard Zednik's tally with 34 seconds to go in the third period, Smyth capitalized on a turnover by defenseman Patrice Brisebois to post his second multi-goal game of the season.

Pressured along the boards in the neutral zone, Brisebois blindly backhanded the puck across the ice and into his own zone. Todd Marchant raced in and gained control before feeding Smyth, who sped past Brisebois and knocked the puck past goaltender Jose Theodore to end Edmonton's three-game losing streak.

Ales Hemsky netted his first NHL goal for the Oilers, who have won five of their last six home meetings with Montreal.

Saku Koivu had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who fell to 0-3-1-2 on their season-high seven-game road trip.
