Koubek defeats Gambill in final

DOHA, Qatar, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Stefan Koubek of Austria won his third career title Saturday when he won the $1 million Qatar Open by posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory over ninth-seeded American Jan-Michael Gambill.

Koubek, who turned 26 Thursday, knocked off defending champion and No. 3 seed Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco in the semifinals.

He collected $142,000 in his first title since March 2000, when he won another hardcourt tournament at Delray Beach, Fla.

Gambill had won two of the three previous meetings with Koubek and was seeking his first title since March 2001.
