Mississippi State 85, South Alabama 74

MOBILE, Ala., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Timmy Bowers and Derrick Zimmerman each scored 21 points Monday night as 10th-ranked Mississippi State ran its winning streak to nine games with an 85-74 triumph over South Alabama.

Bowers, who averages 15.7 points per game, shot 7-of-15 from the field and made four 3-pointers, while Zimmerman, who averages 8.9 points, made 7-of-11 shots.

Leading scorer Mario Austin added 16 points as the Bulldogs (9-1) improved to 16-2 in their last 18 non-conference road games.

Leading 36-35 at the half, Mississippi State opened the second half with a 16-7 run. Bowers started the burst with a pair of 3-pointers and Austin used his athleticism to add a dunk and easy layup.

Malerick Bedden led South Alabama (6-5) with 19 points and Chris Young added 15.
