Boston played most of the second half without its coach. Jim O'Brien was ejected with 9:08 left in the third quarter, after star forward Paul Pierce was knocked to the ground by Stoudemire on a drive to the basket and no foul was called.

Pierce fell awkwardly to the FleetCenter floor and landed on his face, breaking two teeth. He finished with 16 points on 7-of-18 shooting.

Antoine Walker matched a season high with 31 points for the Celtics, who had won eight of their previous 10 games and three straight at home.
