Clifton goes on injured reserve

GREEN BAY, Wis., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Chad Clifton, who was injured when hit by Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp 10 days ago, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.

The blindside hit left Clifton with sprained ligaments in his hip and substantial bleeding into the pelvic area. He is out for the season and may need surgery.

Green Bay re-signed free agent offensive lineman Al Jackson. The 6-3, 311-pounder previously was on the Packers' practice squad.

Packers coach Mike Sherman questioned Sapp's hit, engaging in a tirade with the five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, as the two walked off the field following the game.

The NFL did not fine Sapp for the hit, which did not draw a penalty.

Losing Clifton is a blow to the Packers, who will be forced to finish the season without both of their starting tackles. Right tackle Mark Tauscher already is sidelined with a knee injury. Right guard Marco Rivera also is playing with a torn knee ligament.
