SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz., Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Fuzzy Zoeller took advantage of two mistakes by Don Pooley Sunday and won the $300,000 top prize at the Senior Slam.
After taking a three-shot lead into the second round of the 36-hole event, Zoeller lost his edge at the turn. But Pooley drove into traps at the 15th and 18th holes, allowing Zoeller to win by a stroke.
Zoeller's second-round 1-under-par 71 at Superstition Mountain's Lost Gold Course gave him a 6-under 138 total. Pooley finished at 139 after shooting a 69, good enough for the $150,000 second-place check.
Stewart Ginn of Australia and Jim Thorpe never made runs, finishing at 141 and 145. Ginn earned $100,000 and Thorpe $50,000.
The Senior Slam is an unofficial 36-hole Senior PGA Tour event featuring the season's four Grand Slam winners.
Three of the competitors have made their major victories the only wins of their Senior Tour careers, including Zoeller, who claimed the PGA Senior Championship for his only triumph in 21 starts.
