EVANSTON, Ill., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Jason Wright rushed for a career-high 219 yards and scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 2:17 left Saturday as Northwestern snapped a five-game losing streak with a 41-37 Big Ten Conference victory over Indiana.
Wright's seven-yard run put Northwestern (3-7, 1-5 Big Ten) in front to stay after a bad punt set up the Wildcats at the Indiana 44-yard line.
Northwestern got a boost from the return of quarterback Brett Basanez, who played with a broken bone in his left leg and passed for 233 yards and a touchdown.
But it was Wright who did most of the damage as the Wildcats ended a 10-game Big Ten losing streak. He carried 23 times and became the eighth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
A three-yard touchdown run by Noah Herron capped a 21-point third quarter and gave Northwestern a 34-22 lead.
But linebacker Herana-Daze Jones returned a fumble by Basanez nine yards for a touchdown and another fumble by Basanez led to a one-yard scoring run by Yamar Washington as the Hoosiers (3-6, 1-4) went ahead, 37-34.
Washington carried 31 times for 130 yards against the nation's worst defense, but Indiana went down to its sixth straight road loss.
