Ottawa 4, Carolina 1

OTTAWA, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Petr Schastlivy had his first career two-goal game Wednesday night to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Schatslivy opened the scoring 11:21 into the game on a snap shot through traffic from the top of the right face-off circle that got between Arturs Irbe's blocker and stick. Irbe got a piece of the shot, but not enough to keep it out of the net.

The teams combined for only 12 shots in the second period, but Schatslivy rekindled the offensive spark of the game 1:44 into the third. He flicked a backhand off Carolina defenseman Marek Malik's back, and the wobbling puck handcuffed Irbe and got past him to give the Senators a 2-0 lead.

That was all the support Patrick Lalime would need. He carried the shutout for another six minutes before Ron Francis got the Hurricanes on the scoreboard.

Francis beat defenseman Zdeno Chara to a loose puck in the Ottawa zone and lifted a backhand shot that beat Lalime to his stick side.

Francis tied Dale Hawerchuk for 24th place on the NHL's all-time list with 518 goals. Jeff O'Neill's assist on the goal extended his point streak to seven games.

Radek Bonk added some insurance for Ottawa by scoring a power-play goal with 3:27 left. Mike Fisher iced the game with an empty-net tally in the final minute.

Lalime made 20 saves and extended his lifetime record against the Hurricanes to 7-3-1. He also had his third career assist on Schastlivy's first goal.

With their four-goal outburst, the Senators edged into a tie with the Chicago Blackhawks for the lowest total in the NHL with 10. Both teams have played a league-low four games.

The Hurricanes suffered their third loss in four road games.
