MEMPHIS, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Mississippi State intercepted Danny Wimprine five times and Saturday night and beat the Memphis Tigers for the ninth straight time, 29-17.
The Bulldogs (3-4) have won two non-conference contests in a row, having beaten Troy State last week, 11-8. But they return to SEC play next week against Kentucky.
Despite the interceptions, Memphis (2-5) took a 17-10 lead on Wimprine's 59-yard touchdown pass to Tavares Gideon with 3:05 left in the first half.
Mississippi State closed to within 17-13 on Brent Smith's 42-yard field goal on the final play of the half, then pulled out the win with 16 points in the final quarter.
Smith kicked a 24-yard field goal 39 seconds into the period before the Bulldogs took the lead for good, 22-17, on Fred Reid's one-yard run with 9:59 to play.
Safety Michael Gholar put away the contest by returning Wimprine's fifth interception 28 yards for a score with 1:42 remaining.
Wimprine completed 25 of 48 passes for 282 yards.
Kyle York was 19 of 29 for 149 yards and an interception for Mississippi State. Jerious Norwood paced the Bulldogs on the ground with 67 yards on nine carries.
