Mavericks sign Walt Williams

DALLAS, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- After striking out twice on the free agent market in search of a wing player, the Dallas Mavericks announced Friday they had signed veteran Walt Williams.

Terms were not disclosed. As a 10-year veteran, Williams can receive no less than $1.03 million.

During the summer, the Mavericks expressed serious interest in 6-10 forward Rashard Lewis, who re-signed with Seattle. Last month, they signed Milwaukee guard Michael Redd to an offer sheet, which was matched by the Bucks on Monday.

The addition of Williams came one day after Dallas declined to match the Los Angeles Clippers' offer sheet to Chinese center Wang Zhizhi.

Williams, 32, has career averages of 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds with Sacramento, Miami, Toronto, Portland and Houston.

In three seasons in Houston, Williams became the third-best three-point shooter in franchise history at 39.3 percent. Last season, he averaged 9.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in 48 games and ranked 12th in the NBA in three-point shooting at 42.6 percent.
