Torrance named to Hall of Fame

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Sprinter Gwen Torrence, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist in the women's 200 meters, Wednesday was one of four individuals elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Joining her were middle distance runner Steve Scott, pole vaulter Earl Bell and race walker Larry Young.

"Earl, Steve, Gwen and Larry all contributed greatly to raising their events to a higher level in the U.S. and around the world, and they richly deserve this honor," said USA Track & Field Chief Executive Officer Craig Masback.

Torrence, 37, won the 200 gold at Barcelona and also was first in the 100 at the 1995 World Outdoor Championships. She also won Olympic gold in 1992 and '96 as part of the 400-meter relay team. During her career, Torrence won eight U.S. outdoor titles.

Scott, 46, made three U.S. Olympic teams and had 136 sub-four-minute miles minutes in his career.

Bell, 47, won bronze medals at the 1984 Olympics and the 1987 World Indoor Championships.

Young, 59, won Olympic bronze medals in the 50 kilometers at Mexico City in 1968 and in 1972 at Munich.

The Class of 2002 will be inducted on Dec. 6, raising the number of Hall of Famers to 192. The Hall of Fame is due to reopen in 2003 in New York City.

Eligible voters include current Hall of Famers, various USATF members, and the media.
