Miami 24, Denver 22

DENVER, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Olindo Mare converted a 53-yard field goal with six seconds remaining Sunday night to lift the Miami Dolphins to a dramatic 24-22 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Mare's field goal came 39 seconds after Denver's Jason Elam had boomed a 55-yard field goal to put the Broncos in front, 22-21.

But with the benefit of two timeouts, the Dolphins had a chance to get into field goal position and got a huge break on a mistake by Denver strongside linebacker John Mobley.

Starting at his own 26 with 40 seconds left, Dolphins quarterback Jay Fielder threw two incompletions before finding rookie tight end Randy McMichael, who made a reaching catch for a 17-yard gain.

Following a timeout, Fiedler lofted a pass to the left side and Mobley appeared to have an interception in sight. But the ball went through his hands at the Denver 40 and was caught by Miami's Dedric Ward, who was tackled at the 36.

Miami took its last timeout and called on Mare, who made the winning field goal with room to spare.

Mare's kick capped a 17-point fourth quarter for the Dolphins (5-1), who are tied with San Diego for the AFC's best record. Miami leads Super Bowl champion New England and Buffalo by two games in the East.

Elam had five field goals for the Broncos (4-2).

Denver had a 12-7 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Miami went in front on a two-yard run by Ricky Williams. A 40-yard interception return by Miami's Patrick Surtain boosted the Dolphins' lead to 21-12 only to have Denver's Brian Griese drive his team 80 yards and get a touchdown on a one-yard throw to Mike Anderson with 4:36 to play.

That cut the Denver deficit to two points and set up the final dramatics of the Elam and Mare field goals.
