CONCORD, N.C., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Jeff Burton led 130 of 200 laps Saturday and scored his fifth Busch Series win of the year at the Little Trees 300.
Eleven of the last 14 winners of this event have been from the NASCAR Series. It was Burton's second Busch Series win at the 1.5-mile oval located outside of Charlotte.
"It was awesome," Burton said of his Ford. "The guys made changes on the car in the first pit stop, then it just took off. They have given me awesome race cars. The whole team is working together with the Winston Cup program.
"It's a lot of people working together. This is an awfully great race team and we hope to keep this going next year."
Burton won the race at an average speed of 142.452 miles per hour and finished 16 seconds ahead of Michael Waltrip. Joe Nemechek was third, followed by Jeff Green and David Green. Greg Biffle, who entered the race with his largest lead of the season in the championship race, finished sixth.
He picked up 40 more points on his lead and is now ahead of Jason Keller by 168 points.
"I thought we were better than Jeff early and I got a bad set of tires and that threw me off," Waltrip said. "We adjusted for the bad set of tires then the car pushed all day. We just didn't have the right shock package for this race."
Only three cars finished on the lead lap. Waltrip and Burton started on the front row and were able to drive off to a lead at the start of the event.
But seven laps into the race, Randy LaJoie and Johnny Sauter were involved in a crash in the fourth turn at Lowes Motor Speedway. Both cars were heavily damaged, but Sauter was able to remain in the race.
